I was able to watch one of the best NBA games on TV last March 22. I'm glad I was able to stay awake to finish the nail biter. It was a 139-137 L.A. Lakers squeaker over the fiery Phoenix Suns. I was cheering for Grant Hill and team but Kobe and his impressive clutch plays spelled the difference.

A couple of weird things happened to us at Charlie's--Meow ordered chicken burger but when her order arrived, she turned suspicious at the odd looking patty and asked me to taste it--and true enough, it was Angus beef! We sent it back to the grill. We also made an extra order of fries but when it arrived, instead of the fries, the lady gave us a take-away bag with two burgers. Wow! Well, we said we just ordered for fries. It's the last day of the week and I think the crew are all too tired. I hope they didn't throw away the three extra burgers they made for us. I've always been curious about Rent, the musical. Meow finally brought me to the play last March 6 at the RCBC Plaza. It was the last show for the season and the cast was teary-eyed by the end of the play. I enjoyed watching the performance and the songs are packed with emotions that I can relate to.

Exactly a year has passed since my life got jolted. I think another jolt is coming my way. I hope this doesn't become a yearly trend. 525,600 minutes from now, I hope my life will also be measured in love.

My cousin Abby joined the KFC Krushers’ The Sweet Escape Photo Contest last month and grabbed second place. The photo she submitted was a recreation of downtown L.A. My cousins Vincent, Jelyn, Abby, and Carl joined in the fun. The photo was taken in Intramuros, Manila.

Abby used her 10k prize gift checks to treat family and friends at KFC Shaw. The first prize winner, on the other hand, was awarded an all-expense paid getaway to Switzerland. Boo!

The current UAAP basketball season is coming to a close and I haven't been to a live game. I've covered basketball games from the sidelines from 1996-2001, and it's one of best times I've had in school. Aside from basketball, I think I've been to all sporting events--swimming, fencing, soccer, badminton, table tennis, judo, tennis, volleyball, and chess. I was a photographer for DLSU's The LaSallian from 1996-1998, and before I graduated, served as sports editor for CSB's Benildean on its maiden year in the NCAA. In graduate school, I was fortunate enough to contribute as a sports writer/photographer for UP's The Collegian from 1999-2001. This is also were I met Meow :) Animo La Salle! UP Fight!

It was a very memorable week, spending get-together time with my old pals from the Benildean. It's always a good feeling to see old friends. I met with Janice Lim in Yuujin along Wilson Street last Tuesday and met the rest of the gang at Chilis in Greenbelt 5 last Saturday night. Arvin Vidal brought along our old 1998 logbook and revisited some old angst. Some were not able to make it, but there's definitely a next time! I'll start looking forward again to the unlimited nachos and unlimited kulitan kwentos.

This is where I go to relax. Since 1997, I never grew tired of taking my leisure walks inside the mall and visiting Nike, Men's shoes area, Odyssey, computer and gadget stores. Last year, they added an Annex Atrium where small shows and mini-concerts were held--like Jazz fest, NBA promos, and Noel Cabangon. Also just recently, it's where I go to spend gym time and even blog time. SM Fairview got it all for me!

I spent my birthday last month in Bagac, Bataan. Although some may disagree, it was nice to see the old houses in just one place. It also reminded me of my Mom's old family house in San Juan and ancestral house in Vigan. For some reason, when we went inside the houses, the smell was oddly familiar. It seemed like I could taste the iron grilled window--it sounds weird but maybe it was something I was teething on as a toddler. Uh-oh! It was raining but it added a more vintage feel to the cobbled walkway and the 19th century stone houses.

Designed by architect Juan Arellano, the Met was the premiere stage for Philippine opera, pageants, and plays during World War II. It was inaugurated in 1931 and was damaged during the war in 1945. It was restored by the Americans but gradually fell into decay in the 60's. It was restored again by the city government in 1978 but again, suffered the same fate of degradation. The Met held venue for occasional plays in the 80's until the mid 90's until it was totally abandoned in the late 90s.

Now, the "Save the Met Project" is in full blast and the once majestic building is expected to be back in its full glory by the end of the year. We were lucky to get the chance to visit the construction last weekend.

A lot of things happened last Friday. We saw a motorcycle skid down the road right after it got sandwiched between a white CRV and a passenger Jeepney. The image of the rider as he was slammed to the pavement keeps playing over and over in my head. I hope he is safe.

My office laptop of four years got wet from the water leak off our hotel room ceiling and won’t turn on. Good thing the general manager promised to have it repaired. No Outlook for me then. I hope the guys are ok at work.

We also watched a bunch of stuff on TV: Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino,” Discovery’s “I Shouldn’t Be Alive,” and Janice de Belen’s cooking show “Spoon,” with guest Jose Javier Reyes kept on mentioning that that life is too short. I think these were all signs for me start living my life. I shouldn’t wait for 40—Life begins at 34.

When we had dinner at North Park in Market Market last month, I saw this lone lady on the other table and noticed her body language. She excitedly opened her newly bought “How to Train Your Dragon” book and started flipping through the pages while she waited for her order. When her bowl of Chicken rice arrived, I saw her nod in agreement accompanied by a sly smile on her face. Its contentment personified. I want what she’s having and I wish we could always order a happy moment.

With a lot of things happening lately, work is turning into a blur. Working in a BPO company or call center is like basketball in some ways. Players, even coaches, come and go--but the team remains the same. My account has just been through a series of changes--new site location, new management team, and other things that appear new even though it's not. You just have to go with the flow and answer only when asked. I think it's time for me to change teams. I know I'm no Tim Duncan but I do want to be like Grant Hill. I hope I get traded soon.

It took us 7 hours to reach Lucban, Quezon from Ortigas but it was well worth it. We spent the whole afternoon walking around the beautiful houses with their kiping, plant, and veggie display. I've been a Pentax film camera and Kodak digital camera user my entire life. So this is a huge change for me--owning a Canon brand digital camera. Though, I already have a Canon brand Rangefinder somewhere at home.
My Kodak DX6490 "Chunky" conked out on me last year after giving me solid pictures since 2003. I've decided to get Meow's broken Canon G9. We brought it to the Canon Repair Center in Shaw and had the lens replaced with a new one. Now, let's see what this baby can do.

We took the ferry yesterday from Hulo station in Mandaluyong to Escolta, Manila. The river is not as dirty as I thought it would be. Sure, the stench is there but there were nice spots around the area. It was a comfortable ride and the air-conditioning was fine throughout the 30min or so trip. We then headed for Ongpin for a food trip!

I had a lot of realizations the past two and a half weeks:

-Lugaw with egg and fried tokwa is a good alternative to KFC. Yummy!
-It's comfortable to sleep at night without aircon.
-I'm too big to ride the bus going to Fairview. I have to sit sideways.
-Angelicum still looks the same. The feel of the school and its surrounding are still the same.
-Razorback still rocks! Wasakan ng tenga!
-Twinings strawberry and mango hot tea is a relaxing fix at Sugarhouse in SM Fairview--overlooking the Ortigas area.
-The blind masseus at Fairview Mall give the best massage.
-The breakwaters behind Folk Arts Theatre is always a cool place to be on senti mode with my puffs of Tabacaleras.
-Old bestfriends don't change.
-Life is like the seashore, just when you think you've made your mark on the sand, the sea water washes it away.
-Facebook and Blogging keeps me in touch with everyone.
-Ma Mon Luk always has, and will always be--funky smelling.
-Neil Gaiman and Azrael have cool professions.
-Money is not the root of all evil--greed is.
-"Loyalty, Friendship, Trust" is fine--just don't forget "Integrity."
-No matter how hard you try to forget your problems by doing a lot of things, it still haunts you every day. It sucks!
-I'm blessed with really good friends at the office.
-If everything else fails, your family never fails to support you. I now love having breakfast with my parents.
-From now on, Sykes is not my life, it will just part of it.
-I feel more happy spending more time with Maw.

It's been more than 15 years since I last set foot in Angelicum and oddly enough, the feel is still the same. Most of the old structures haven't changed except for some new additions: walkways, benches, canteen stalls, and a swimming pool. It was a good trip through memory lane and it made me think that I could always start over.

The Batibot tree still looks the same.

We trooped to Rockwell(Rockwell!) in Makati last March 18 to experience Neil Gaiman's book signing. I brought along two books with me, "Marvel 1602" and "Fragile Things." My officemate Lui brought along her four volumes of Absolute Sandman Series. Man, those books are heavy, each volume weighs around 4kg, I think. I helped her carry everything with a gym bag.

The first time I had a comic book signed was more than ten years ago, it was during the release of Portacio and Alanguilan's classic "Stone."

It was really nice to have experienced waiting in line again, listening to personal accounts, and seeing everyone really excited. All in all, it was a fruitful four hour wait.

Look for me in the crowd.

Hot Air Balloon Fest 2010

This is my third time to go see the hot air balloon fest. The balloons didn't inflate the last time I was here (two years ago) due to bad weather and strong winds. But we're lucky this time!

You really have to be early to catch the balloons in flight. 530-630am is the best time to be at the Clark Air Base in Pampanga.
